Dvd Regions & Formats Explained
Regions :
Dvds are produced worldwide. Different sections of the world produce different region specific Dvds. The following table shows the different regions.
Region 1: USA, Canada Region 2: Europe, Japan, South Africa, Middle East Region 3: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, South America, Central America Region 5: Russia, Eastern Europe Region 6: China Region 0: Any Country (Region: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6) |
So basically, if you own an Australian Dvd player, it will play region 4, or region 0, Dvds. Lots of the newer Dvd players however, are multi-region, which means they can play Dvds from any region from around the world, & that information should be available on the dvd machine or in the instruction manual. If you are an international customer, please ensure your equipment can play the dvd you are buying. Refunds will NOT be given for Dvds that cannot be played due to incorrect region or Format.
Especially International buyers from the United Stated & Canada, please take note.
Formats :
Almost all Australian Dvds use PAL format, and it is very commonly used worldwide.
Another common format is NTSC, which is primarily used in the USA, Canada & Japan, but it does appear sometimes in Australian Dvds. Here in Australia, if you have an older television, playback using an NTSC disk will probably be displayed in Black & White, as the older TVs cant process the format correctly.
A lot of American & Canadian TVs cant produce PAL format & therefore cannot play these discs. Please consult your instruction manual for conformation on what format is able to be played.
PAL : Phase Alternating Line. The colour TV broadcast system used in Australia, UK & Europe. A PAL picture delivers a better quality picture than NTSC due to its 625 horizontal lines (sharper picture and better colours).
Please Note: DVD players sold in NTSC countries (United States, Canada and Japan) may not be compatible with the PAL system, preventing playback. Your TV set will also need to be PAL compatible in order to view these DVDs in colour. Please refer to your user manual or manufacturer to determine compatibility.
Please ensure that your equipment is able to play the disc, before you make purchase, & dont hesitate to email me if you have any queries.
Note : Most recent dvd players and televisions are capable of displaying both PAL and NTSC formats, and most DVD players can be made multi-region by doing a Google search for the make and model and following the instructions to make it multi-region - its really very easy. If you are unsure please check the manuals for your dvd player and television.
