A Little History of Charm Bracelets...
Charm bracelets are nearly as old as mankind Ancient civilizations were well known for wearing charms to please their gods, ward off evil spirits and gain entry into the afterlife. It wasn't until the 1890's that Queen Victoria made charm bracelets fashionable, and not just for religious protection. Charms in the Medieval Era
Many charms during Medieval times were mini-spells contained in an object or series of objects, which were carried in a small pouch by the wearer. Typically, these charms or amulets were metal, stone, plants, candle wax, fruit, coins, or anything else of symbolic value to the wearer. Perhaps an individual would adopt a special feather or coin or actually take items to handcraft a dream catcher. Most often the amulet or charm was worn as a necklace or ring.
Charms in the Victorian Era
During the Victorian era, the tradition of the "ribbon pulling" came into vogue. A bride would have small charms attached to satin ribbons placed within the icing of her wedding cake. The pulls represented distinctive symbols of love and romance, friendship and future. Each of the bridesmaids as well as other important maidens attending the reception would pull a charm from the cake before it was cut. Gazing at her charm, a young woman could see a foretelling of good luck, romance or good fortune, depending on the charm she selected. An old Victorian saying indicates the meaning of four traditional charms: "The ring for marriage within a year; The penny for wealth, my dear; the thimble for an old maid or bachelor born; The button for sweethearts all forlorn."
According to Elizabeth Florence, president of the Jewelry Information Center, "The first charm bracelets were probably worn by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians and Hittites from 500 to 400 B.C. Those charms were made of lapis lazuli, rock crystal and other gems and were inscribed with small designs, such as figures of gods, man and animals. They were immediately associated with special powers." WW II caused another revival of charm bracelets in America in the 1940's and 1950's, as soldiers stationed abroad picked up charms as souvenirs in the European cities they visited and brought them home for wives and girlfriends. The fashion trend continued well into peacetime. Charms still remain a popular jewelry item Popular themes include horoscope signs, birthstone charms, travel souvenirs, and family keepsakes. Many women start collecting charms when they are children, and the charm bracelet grows along with them, reflecting hobbies and personal experience. A charm bracelet can hold a small replica of a graduation cap, wedding bells, or lockets with children's photos.
