Q.
Which Antenna do I need?
A. Before
choosing a UHF antenna a few considerations need to be made.
Size
Location on
vehicle
Price
Performance
Q.
Size
A. General
rule of thumb is the bigger the better, however
consideration should be given to carport or garage clearance, trees in the
street, etc. Although made from durable materials most antennas wont last if
continually bashed into overhead obstacles, and this
will void any warranty as well.
Q.
Location of antenna on Vehicle?
A. Best
mounting location is generally high on the roof, but not always practical, for
4wd we recommend bull bar mount. This works well and lets you keep an eye on
the antenna when in rough terrain (Larger antennas are popular for 4WD). For
sedans, guard mounts are popular (no external holes on vehicle) using a lighter
duty antenna.
Q.
Price?
A. Well,
its like the old saying goes, 'you get what you pay for' . We only sell high quality respected brand
name antennas (GME, Uniden, ZCG Scalar, Axis) and all have warranty (but not
for physical abuse) and most are made in Australia.
Q.
What gain (dB)?
A. This is
an area of some confusion, although the higher the gain the better the performance,
there are several methods of determining gain (dB).
The typical
white fibreglass antennas (co-linear design) have a lower db rating but will
out perform the smaller 6db or 9db stainless steel types; this is due to the
greater signal efficiency in this type of antenna design.
Elevated
feed antennas also add about 2-2.5dB to the gain of the whip top rating. A
common area of confusion is the gain of an elevated feed steel type antenna
(part numbers AE4018K1 and AE4012K2) are advertised by some as 4.5db but by
others as 6db or 6.5db, we advertise by the commonly used industry recognised standard of 6db for this type of antenna, the
same as the majority of manufacturers here in Australia.
Q.
What antenna will suit my UHF?
A. Any UHF
antenna will suit any UHF, its the size, gain and
price consideration that should determine your choice.
Q.
Which brand suits my UHF ?
A. Any
brand of antenna will suit any brand of UHF, they are all interchangeable.
