  • EDIBLE ICING IMAGE APPLICATION TIPS

Tips on Storing and Applying Edible Image® Designs:

Read ALL these instructions FIRST before applying the image- then apply using the steps below titled "Steps for Applying the Edible Image".

CAUTION:   Do not remove the edible cake art image from its air-tight plastic ziploc bag until the cake is frosted and ready for the decoration to be put on it.  Air dries the edible image and makes it brittle and cracked! If this happens, the edible will not peel off the paper backing, and you must use the troubleshooting tips below. If you do take the image out, replace it back in the bag as soon as possible, just make sure all of the air is out of the bag before zipping the bag back up.

The Edible Image is a moisture sensitive product and reacts differently in different climates. In an extremely dry condition the image seems crumbly or in extremely humid conditions the image is hard to get off the backing, you may need to take the steps below under troubleshooting tips. In most areas, Edible Image works well, stored in its zip loc bag, and kept on the shelf. I DO NOT recommend storing in the refrigerator or freezer before using as this tends to make the image crumbly.  For storage before using it on a cake just place the image inside the protective ziploc bag and cardboard sleeve in an undisturbed flat area. The Edible Image has an approximate shelf life of 6 months-1 year.

Steps for Applying the Edible Image:

  • Make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling the image.
  • If the cake is frozen, thaw it slightly before icing to avoid cracking, then apply the image. If the icing has formed a crust, especially with royal icing, spray with a fine mist of water before applying the design, do not over water!  DO NOT ADD extra moisture to non-dairy whipped toppings. Remove the Edible Image® design from the ziploc bag JUST BEFORE application.
  • Remove the design by gently rolling it over the edge of a table or counter to loosen, you should start to see it peel off easily.
  • CAREFULLY PEEL the image away from its backing. If it does not come off easily STOP and read troubleshooting tips below. It should come off easily in one piece which avoids tearing the image.
  • Lay the Edible Image® in the desired position on the freshly iced cake.
  • GENTLY SMOOTH EDGES with your fingertips, as needed.  If the image "bubbles" after application, GENTLY TAP (do not rub) the image. Feel free to write inscriptions on top of the Edible Image®, and decorate around the image with piped icing as you want. Just be sure not to push the decorating tip through the image. As with any food coloring, UV light will fade the colors over time, avoid direct sunlight.
  • Keep the finished cake refrigerated to extend shelf life if not using within a few hours.

Troubleshooting tips:

  • If you are having trouble getting the image off of the paper backing, take the image out of the bag and put it in the freezer for 5-10 minutes.
  • If the image appears to be coming off the paper backing in pieces and is very crumbly lay the image on a hot-(not heated) surface for a few minutes-(like a pan out of the oven)- DO NOT put it in the oven though. This is a quick method and usually works fine.

You can expect The Edible Image to have a shelf life life of about 1 year. It will last as long as your cake item.  I would suggest that you would apply the image only prior to eating the cake, especially with ice cream cakes.  Having the image stay on the icing will make it run, especially with ice cream cakes.  For a regular icing cake when not eating soon, place the finished cake in the refrigerator until just prior to the party.

Types Of Products For Edible Image Applications:

Edible Image works wonderfully in many types of applications. It works the best on buttercream icing. But just as there are different bakers/decorators, there are different "Buttercreams" as below. Edible Image can be applied to any product. You are only limited by your imagination and the Images’ sensitivity to moisture.
