| My own work with Minerals began as a studio potter mixing raw glazes that would manifest the most brilliant of colors at the end of a heated firing. I watched the colors mix and mingle and glisten in these glassy and crystaline formations. So many variables - some outcomes were wonderful, others disappointing. I was ever amazed how the nickel and cobalt would produce a Sapphire blue - the Coppers and iron, would give me Emeralds etc. Chrome would dull and opaque the work, but give it a satin like consistency. I loved my lustres and worked with glass and porcelains. I spent thousands of dollars and hours developing crystalline glazes - which involved opening a kiln door at extremely high temperatures - at great risk to the interior and pieces within! I did it though, at the expense of much - I actually grew some magnificent and gleaming pieces. And as an artist I felt very satisfied with the colors that were being produced - clear natural colors that have very definite tones belonging to their mineral family. Later I observed and studied exactly how these colors have been held in various mythologies to have intrinsic patterns of energy and influence - inspired by their color and quality given out. And, personally, I love gems anyway - I am intriqued with the natural world and its creations - and also believe that, as the Vedic tradition would have it, there can be some very positive influences emanating from from them. It is still exciting for me to see a new piece - to study it, to hold it - to appreciate its life and formation. I will try very hard in my shop here to bring you items of great interest and value. Please email me if you have an queries or concerns - or just to say hi to a fellow collector - as stated below I can organise certificates for your gems (at the valuer's fee) if you need them before sending and am happy to arrange it. thankyou for stopping by! .... gabrielle. |

Gem Information regarding treatments.
Is the use of treatments globally accepted? Yes, with close to 99% of the more popular gem types treated, all permanent techniques are universally accepted. As the majority of gemstones traded internationally have undergone some form of treatment, always assume treatment when purchasing gemstones. In fact, some techniques such as heating are centuries old - in all likelihood your grandmother’s ruby ring has been heat-treated! |
Are all the treatments used permanent? With the exception of Emeralds that are treated with Colorless Oil or Polymers, only knowingly accepts treatments that are permanent and stable. |
Why are natural gemstones treated? Most commonly used to improve the color or appearance of the finished product, some gemstones simply would not exist in salable quantities without treatment. For example, heating greenish brown Zoisite to 600 degrees Celsius produces the currently popular vibrant violet-blue Tanzanite. No heating, no Tanzanite! Please note that the term “natural gemstones” refers to those formed in the earth, whether or not they have been treated after mining - this is in distinct contrast to “lab”, “man made” or “synthetic” gems. |
Does treatment affect a gem’s value? Interestingly, in some precious and semi-precious colored gemstones there is no variation between the value of treated and untreated material. In fact, treating may even increase a gems value. For example, when greenish brown Zoisite is heated to 600 degrees Celsius, an incredible metamorphosis takes place. Vibrant violet blue Tanzanite is created, commanding a far higher market price. However, high quality unheated Rubies and Sapphires are extremely rare and command a much higher market price. When purchasing high quality Rubies and Sapphires, please be aware that unheated material is almost non-existent, as a result, always purchase from a reliable supplier who guarantees their gemstones or have the seller’s claim verified by a qualified expert. For other people, treatments are a godsend, as they make expensive gems more affordable. |
| All of my listings are based on some relevant experience and the best of my knowledge, and (more importantly) what the cutter has passed on to me about the material being sold. However, this is an age of techniques and advances, and I am reminded from time to time that it can take specialist equipment sometimes only to really determine if there has been a treatment applied to the natural gem.
I can certainly supply independent gem certificates from such professionals here - at an extra cost of $25-$45 depending on the valuer and the gem. It may well be worth it if the possibility of a treatment is important to you, and am quite happy to arrange this at the point of sale, thankyou. Are all gemstones treated? Always applied, this treatment alters color by the external diffusion of coloring elements. |
